To be honest, I’ve been rather enjoying Tinchy’s contributions to pop in 2009. This Sugababe-assisted number doesn’t have the initial sugar-rush fizz of Take Me Back or Number One, but it’s got a kind of quaint wannabe-epic pseudo-grandeur about it. Like a kind of twee British take on Usher, or something. I like that.

One of the last people I expected to graft a bit of fashionable disco pizzazz onto their sound was former acoustic troubadour type Kid Harpoon. To be fair, this is less of a radical makeover than we’ve seen this year with, say, Jack Penate, but the twinkly decorations on the chorus are a world away [...]
After the dizzying euphoric rush of The Reeling and its accompanying video, To Kingdom Come finds the Passion Pit boys in a more subdued, reflective mood. If it lacks the spark and muscle of previous efforts, and Michael Angelakos’ reedy vocals are more exposed, it still has a wide-eyed charm that keeps you listening. The [...]
Lovely Swedish downbeat disco diva Sally Shapiro is on typically pretty form here. It’s more of what we’ve come to expect from her, and certainly no match for her previous single, the utterly sublime Miracle. But the video is quite special in a cutesy fish-centric fashion. Aw.
Right then – this would be the Little Boots “reboot” then, if you will. Following offical debut New In Town, a relatively lacklustre affair with a video that deliberately (apparently) avoided presenting an “image” of Little Boots*, here we have what we expected first time around. Tenorion at the start of the video? Check. Shiny [...]
The Most Serene Republic – Heavens to Purgatory

I’m assuming this is a fanvid rather than the official one, but it goes pretty well even if it is more than a little creepy. Anyway, I had to post this, simply because it’s one of the most glorious things I’ve heard all year. Heavens to Purgatory was chucked out as a free download a [...]
If you follow Calvin on Twitter, you’ll be aware that his tweeting pretty much mirrors his recorded output – it never stops, for a start, and it clumsily straddles the line between hilarity, genius, and insufferable irritation. So here we go again. One thing you can’t debate is his ability to knock out a sure-fire [...]
You might be forgiven for thinking that Ms. Hatherley’s decamping from Ash in favour of touring with Bat For Lashes would signal a similar change in her solo material. Not quite – it’s still melodious guitar-led power-pop. Perhaps a little darker around the edges (and she certainly looks a bit glummer than usual in the [...]
What’s going on here? I realise I’m a bit late to the party here, but I’ve just noticed that someone appears to have given galumphing Ordinary Muppet Preston a bit of a makeover. Now he’s gone and decided he’s Simon Le Bon auditioning for another bloody Bond theme. Don’t you GET IT Preston? You have [...]
