Aside from having possibly the worst name ever, there were other reasons I didn’t connect with Swedish electropop duo Lissi Dancefloor Disaster when they first cropped up a few years back. Their initial tracks sounded half-finished and over-reliant on gimmicky 8-bit bleeps and occasional shouting. Sort of Fisherprice Lolita Storm. This, though, is much better. [...]

As the cast list would suggest, this is a self-consciously batshit affair. Bizarrely catchy though. I’ll leave you to figure out what the Map of Tasmania they’re referring to is. The video is probably NSFW.

Fantastically watchable video for US electro house DJ Gartner’s latest Justice-esque banger, in which director Ryan McNamara takes us on an epic animated tour of American history. As well as great animation, there are also geeky historical jokes aplenty, and you get to play ‘spot the deliberate anachronism’. Overall, one of the most interesting videos [...]

Video: Nicki Minaj ft. Drake – Moment 4 Life

On the plus side: Amazing and pleasingly barmy intro. On the down side: Will make zero sense to anyone not fully immersed in Nicki’s already over-elaborate self-mythology. On the plus side: Commercial-sounding pop record with great crossover potential. On the down side: Limp sub-Rihanna fluff. On the plus side: Predictably amazing visuals and colour palette. [...]

If you didn’t see this last week, it’s definitely a pleasing Sunday evening diversion. The Portland Cello Project offer up a full orchestral take on Kanye West’s incredible All Of The Lights. Pretty spellbinding stuff.

I mentioned this melodramatic gem from Swedish synth types Karl X Johan a few times last year. Now it has a video, and a pretty great one at that. It’s a little story, told through EXTREME CLOSE UPS. It’s a little disorienting at times, but ultimately rather pretty.

FRIDAY TIME. 5 more songs for your listening consideration. All very good, trust me. Rebecca & Fiona – Bullets Swedish duo introduced on Arjan Writes earlier in the week. This is a demure, laidback slice of dance pop, with some nice smooth guitar action as a bonus. Sounds a bit like Tegan & Sara’s poppier [...]

Earlier in the week, Lykke Li TRICKED AND CONFUSED ME with some sort of half-arsed non-video for this and I did a rant about it. Anyway, now she’s revealed the “proper” video. The big tease. It’s all a bit literal. She’s stalking (“following”) some dude through some snow. In fact, its otherwise so literal that [...]

Best video I’ve seen all year. It’s rare I’ll actually pay serious attention to a video, rather than just going “pretty image fits with pretty song” or “this looks balls”. Yes, I belong to the Beavis and Butthead school of music vid criticism. I KNOW. Anyway, this one has lots of the “pretty image fits [...]

Video: The Go! Team – Buy Nothing Day

Oh good, it’s one of those “retro” shit-looking videos. The world needs more of those. Anyway, new Go! Team is always a good thing. This one has Bethany from Best Coast doing the vocals. It’s not their finest moment, if I’m honest. But it’s breezy and catchy. If forgettable. Thankfully they are still amazing live.
