Video: Visions of Trees – Sometimes it Kills

I posted about this a few weeks ago (yes, OK, about a year after the rest of the blogging community, but still). Anyway, in honour of its upcoming re-release, Sometimes it Kills now gets a wonderful, beautifully shot video. Mystifying, but beautiful nonetheless. Does a rather splendid job of capturing the conflicting emotions the song conveys.

I’m also not sure I raved quite enough about how absolutely and totally brilliant this is. Haunting is an overused word but it’s just RIGHT here. Also, just turn it up really loud and listen. There are few other tracks around that are doing such a brilliant job of combining classic influences (Kate Bush springs readily to mind) with something sounding quite so on the ball sonically. None of it feels forced or grafted together, this isn’t a case of “beautiful voice + vaguely dubsteppy vworps = see what happens”, it feels entirely organic. Just great, great stuff. It sounds a bit cynical to keep repeating this sort of thing, but of everything I’ve heard so far this year, Visions of Trees most deserve an xx-style crossover in 2011.

Most of all it’s just heartening that people are making music that has so much emotional heft while still sounding new and exciting.

Also I’m a bit gutted I didn’t spot them last year. Anyway, they are touring soon and I’m off to buy me a ticket. Woo.
