SO I suppose there’s no harm in adding to the flood of rubbish that will no doubt be written about this. First, the song: It’s been around a while now, so a few thoughts. I didn’t like it much at all at first. It’s now grown on me as a pop song, but still feels [...]

— INSTANT HITS: BEST OF FEBRUARY 2011 (00:38:52) Despite a couple of big disappointments, February was a pretty good month overall for new music and videos. The playlist above has 10 of my highlights – video where available, audio where not. Links to the original posts below: — 1. Austra – Beat And The Pulse [...]
Video: Pnau – The Truth

Nick Littlemore’s time hanging out in silly costumes with Luke Steele in Empire of the Sun seems to have brought out the extrovert in him. The Truth is massively OTT pop music, and it has a suitably daft video to match. One of my singles of the year so far. Download the Jump Jump Dance [...]

I LOVE THIS VIDEO! Like a silent film, but with beautiful modern typography. Wonderful stuff. Portuguese DJ Moullinex has been spoiling us with his videos lately, starting with the disco-tastic Love It Is, Then, following on with the rather snazzy vid for Catalina which does funky things with Kinect. This is definitely the highlight so [...]
Somewhat amazingly, this is the lead single from Ultra Naté’s SIXTH album. And apparently, she’s been doing OK over in the states for all these years. It’s getting on for FIFTEEN years since this (which still sounds pretty fresh, to be honest). She’s still sounding pretty good though (vocally, if anything, slightly less irritating) and [...]
More excellent stuff from Manchester pop twosome Hurts. This falls firmly in the flamboyant, symphonic Pet Shop Boys pop side of their, um, oeuvre. (I always think of eggs when I write that word. Eggs.) Anyway, in other words, it’s not the slightly drippy 90s pop stuff that stops Happiness from being 100% amazing. It’s [...]

HELLO… I appear to be writing about a song featuring the DRUMMER from PLACEBO as the SINGER. Not sure what’s got into me of late. Anyway, in lots of ways this should be awful, and in some it kind of is (the guitars are muddy 90s blah, the lyrics are pretty pap) but on the [...]
I don’t know if it’s a sign that I’m getting older, or just the way the musical wind’s blowing in 2011, but I’m certainly enjoying a lot of this ultra-tasteful wave of atmospheric post-dubstep stuff. Actually, London-based trio Nedry have been around for a while – A42 was the highlight of their last record in [...]
Video: Star Slinger – Mornin’

Another sunny, uplifting slice of chilled out cut’n’paste wizardry from Mancunian DJ Darren Williams. This one takes a big lift from this Staple Singers track, and chops it up to produce something that (typically) sounds like a 2011 take on The Avalanches. The pretty video captures the relaxed, carefree mood perfectly. Lovely stuff.
